Searching for balance between body and mind: yoga is popular in all age groups, especially among people over 60, and that is well explained!
Many people still think that yoga requires flexible muscles, exceptional balance and stamina to assume all positions with suppleness. However, as with any sport or hobby: it's all about what you get out of it for yourself. Often, listening to your own body, 'mind' and your limits is the biggest challenge and most important lesson! Nice side effect: you automatically get better step by step at things you may not have thought you could do before.
With full attention
Whether you do a form of yoga in which you lie in positions for a long time to stretch out your muscles (yin), flowing changes of posture like the well-known sun salutation (flow) or sitting on your chair doing quiet yoga exercises (chair yoga); there is a suitable form for everyone. By focusing on your breathing and learning to accept thoughts or sensations instead of being distracted by them, you can free up more space to feel what your body or mind is asking for. You become more aware of your own body and posture, allowing you to take better care of your muscles. Sometimes you will hear that focusing on breathing feels uncomfortable for someone, try not to force this rhythm, eventually you will notice that inhaling and exhaling fits logically with a movement and actually comes naturally.
Better in body, stronger in mind
If you ask people after a yoga session what they notice, you often hear that they experience less stress, are calmer and have a more satisfied, connected feeling. Scientific research shows that doing yoga has a strong positive effect on anxiety symptoms, concentration and memory functions. But it doesn't stop there. Research specifically targeting people over 60 shows that yoga also effectively contributes to improving: (variation in) heart rate, blood pressure, blood glucose levels, mobility and muscle strength, sleep quality, incontinence complaints, vitality and overall perceived quality of life. Those are some arguments! And à if you are still worried about your muscles, make it a yoga-FIT session...
